What You'll Work On
Gain hands-on experience playing jazz in a small-group setting. Jazz Combo gives students the opportunity to develop their ensemble playing, improvisation, communication, and overall musicianship while rehearsing and performing alongside other musicians.
Cornerstone Combo
Our inagural jazz ensemble will be especially curated towards exceptional high school students providing them an opportunity to grow in their music making abilities with like minded students. This combo is fully underwritten allowing students an opportunity to participate with the tuition being fully covered.
Who's It For
Designed for mature high school students and musicians looking to deepen their small-group experience, this Jazz Combo program builds your improvisation, listening, and ensemble skills in a tight-knit setting. Over ten rehearsals and one final performance at Churchill Grounds, a small group of around eight students works together to master the dynamic interaction and communication of playing in a jazz ensemble. At the conclusion of the course, each student will receive a T-shirt, folder, and a special gift.

About Billy Thornton
Based in Atlanta, Georgia, bassist and vocalist Billy Thornton brings a fresh perspective to jazz by reinventing pop and rock hits from artists like The Beatles, Taylor Swift, and Jimi Hendrix into creative vehicles for improvisation. Known throughout the Southeast for his work across genres ranging from jazz to Celtic Rock, Thornton leads his quartet with an emphasis on group play, musical exploration, and honest vocal expression. By treating today’s songs with the same creative freedom as traditional standards, he and his bandmates craft dynamic, inventive performances that bridge contemporary music and classic jazz.
