What You'll Work On
Explore the people, recordings, movements, and cultural forces that shaped the history of jazz. Students will develop a deeper understanding of how jazz evolved, and the artists who helped define it. The course will cover the following eras of jazz music:
Part 1: Jazz Roots Through Swing Era
Part 2: Bebop, Post-Bot, and Modern Jazz
Who's It For
Mature high school students through adults, this course is ideal for musicians and music enthusiasts alike who want to deepen their appreciation and knowledge of the jazz tradition. Students will engage in robust discussions on music, history, and culture.
At the completion of the course, each student will receive a Jazz Academy T-shirt, folder and a special gift.

About Dr. Gordon Vernick
Dr. Gordon Vernick is a Professor of Music and Coordinator of Jazz Studies at Georgia State University, holding degrees from Ithaca College, the University of Miami, and the University of Northern Colorado. As an accomplished freelance trumpet player and educator, he has performed globally across multiple genres, served in leadership roles for major jazz education associations, and directs programs like the Rialto Youth Jazz Orchestra and the GSU Faculty Jazztet. In addition to performing alongside world-renowned jazz artists and conducting international residencies, he is a Van Laar trumpet clinician whose podcast, Jazz Insights, has surpassed 12 million downloads.
