MLW Lab Band Audition

• All auditioners perform one short, prepared jazz piece, either a jazz etude or standard tune; improvisation optional, but no more than one chorus.

​

• Saxes: Written Bb major scale, two octave; D major scale, two octaves; chromatic scale starting on lowest note up to highest comfortable note and back. All scales should be slurred, ascending and descending, performed in 8th notes, quarter=120.

​

• ​Trumpets: Lead trumpet-Written Ab major scale, Bb major and C major scale, two octaves; F major scale, two octaves.  Chromatic scale from low F# to highest comfortable note. All scales should be slurred, ascending and descending, performed in 8th notes, quarter=120. Section trumpet, same but two octave; F scale is optional:

 

• Trombones: Major scale, 2 octaves; Ab major scale, 2 octaves; lead trombone-C major scale 2 octaves (C3-C5); chromatic scale starting on lowest note (Bb) up to highest comfortable note and back. All scales should be legato tongued, ascending and descending, performed in 8th notes, quarter=120.

• Piano/Guitar: ii7-V7-I7 in major keys: Bb, Db, E, F and G; minor keys Ab, C, Bb, G. Play in a swing feel and Latin groove, two beats per chord, quarter note=150.

​

• Bass: Walking bass line, Bb 12-bar blues progression, swing feel, quarter=150, two choruses;

         ii7-V7-I7 progression in Bb, Db major Latin groove.

 

• Drums: 16 bars, swing groove, quarter=200; 16 bars, bossa nova, quarter=120; 16 bars, shuffle swing, quarter=150; 16 bars, samba, half note=100.
